Stocks can be a wild roller coaster ride, but they don’t call you to fix the toilet in the middle of the night. Any investment worth it’s salt requires maintenance, from flipping homes to pruning your stock portfolio. So which has performed better over the last 100 years and proven to provide the best returns for investors?

Economists from the German central bank, UC Davis, and the University of Bonn lead a study that poured over 140 years of economic data and published their findings in a paper “The Rate of Return on Everything, 1870-2015. After comparing returns on equities, residential real estate, bonds and treasury bills, they found residential real estate produced the higher returns: 7 percent per year.
